How to Plan a Sustainable Wedding

Planning a wedding is not just about celebrating your love, but also expressing the shared values that brought you together. As an environmentally mindful couple, this means ensuring your day also honors your commitment to our planet. At Oak + Honey, we’re not just here to help you plan a wedding; we're here to help you plan a day that is sustainable. We tell our couples to start that sustainable wedding planning process by keeping a few key things in mind:

PROFESSIONALS

One of the most significant steps towards an eco-friendly wedding is to hire professionals who are also sustainable in their own business. When selecting vendors such as your venue, caterer, florist, and other vendors, look for those who have been recognized for their sustainable certifications or who proudly share their eco-friendly practices.

Don't hesitate to ask how they minimize their carbon footprint, or what waste reduction strategies they have in place. By choosing vendors who align with your values, you're also encouraging the growth of sustainable  business practices—something that extends well beyond your big day. Utilize referrals to find professionals who are already part of a like-minded community. This network ensures that every detail of your event is infused with intention and respect for the environment.

RECYCLING AND UPCYCLING

Using the practices of recycling and upcycling is another way to make an impact. It's all about creativity and adaptability (which is where we can come in). You may want to consider repurposing décor across your bridal shower, ceremony, and reception. Rented furniture can add character and be re-used for other events, thus reducing waste. When choosing invitations and other stationery, opt for recycled materials paired with digital aspects to cut down on paper use. Attire can be sourced from ethical designers, or even borrowed or rented. For wedding favors, think of gifts that give back—edible items, seedlings for planting, or charitable donations in your guests' names—favors that won't end up forgotten in a drawer.

SEASON MATTERS

We always remind our couples that your wedding season matters. A truly eco-conscious wedding includes a menu that reflects the bounty of the season. This reduces the demand for out-of-season items that require extensive transportation and refrigeration, helping lower your carbon footprint. Plus, seasonal flowers and food support local farmers and artisans, minimizing environmental stress while giving back to the community.

Remember, every step towards a sustainable wedding is one more step towards a healthier planet. These efforts demonstrate respect not only for each other but for the Earth that sustains us all.

At Oak + Honey, we are dedicated to guiding you through crafting an event that joyously celebrates your union and your eco-conscious beliefs. We’re here to help you make your vision for a sustainable wedding a beautiful, tangible reality, and we’d love to chat with you
