Eco-Friendly Event Tips

How to Find the Best Cleveland Event Planner for Your Sustainable Wedding

In the face of climate change, deforestation, and plastic pollution, we’ve been pleased to see sustainability become a major priority for couples when planning their wedding. From vegan cakes to locally sourced flowers, more and more engaged couples are adopting planet-friendly practices to reduce their wedding’s environmental footprint. We only get one planet, after all!

As fellow earth lovers, we are always looking for alternative ways to plan a wedding without compromising our shared environment. Things like seed paper invitations, ethical fashion, and decor rentals might seem small and insignificant, but they certainly add up!

Every eco-conscious decision matters — and it starts with who you hire to plan your sustainable wedding. Your wedding planner will know how to navigate Cleveland’s vibrant event scene, connecting you with vendors who share your values and sourcing items in a green and ethical manner.

Keep reading to learn the three easy steps for finding the best Cleveland wedding planner who can help you achieve your sustainable wedding dreams.

Define your sustainable wedding vision

Before you can find the perfect sustainable wedding planner, you need to consider how you envision your big day! While waste reduction and other eco-friendly practices are essential, you also need to confirm that your vendor team’s aesthetics align with your dream wedding.

Are you picturing a garden celebration with tons of greenery and pampas grasses? Or do you prefer a modern look with minimal decor? Will you want a fully plant-based menu sourced from local farms and orchards? Since your Cleveland wedding planner will help you connect with like-minded event professionals, you’ll want to nail down these big-picture details before starting your search.

Research a shortlist of sustainable event planners

With a clear vision, start looking for planners in your area. Wedding websites, like The Knot and WeddingWire, are great places to start, as you can search by specific vendor categories. They also list reviews and testimonials, providing you with a third-party opinion of a company’s brand experience.

When you find a wedding planner that catches your eye, spend some time reviewing their website to learn more about their services. Go through their portfolios to get a feel for their work and how well it aligns with your vision. Look for event planners that highlight the importance of sustainability on their website, highlighting their experience in imagery and content (like blog posts).

You’ll also want to visit their social media pages to see the content they post and the engagement it receives. Do they post gorgeous weddings each week? Are there comments from past couples that demonstrate a positive experience? How often do they talk about sustainability and eco-friendly practices? You can learn a lot simply by scrolling through a few Instagram posts!

In addition to online research, don’t hesitate to ask your friends, family, and colleagues for recommendations. They can point you toward sustainable vendors they’ve hired, as well as any local resources (like blogs and directories) that can support your research and planning.

Conduct interviews with your top choices

Once you’ve narrowed it down to a handful of qualified planners, schedule a consultation with each to get a better feel of their personality and experience. Before your first meeting, create a list of essential questions to ask and compare across the board. Here are a few to consider:

  • Can you tell me about your approach to sustainability? I would love to hear some examples of how you reduce waste, recycle decor, etc.

  • If we move forward, do you have a list of preferred vendors that value sustainability as much as we do?

  • Let me tell you a little bit about our wedding vision. How will you tailor our celebration to feel like a one-of-a-kind event?

  • How much influence will we have over key decisions? Will we work as partners?

  • Could you tell us about your contingency plans in case of rain, venue issues, missing vendors, etc.?

  • Our budget is [X]. Can you achieve our vision with that budget?

Getting to know each of your potential planners can help you identify who most fits your needs, both in terms of sustainability and desired aesthetics. Just as important as aligning with your values, you’ll also want to select a planner who is transparent about costs and can confidently agree to your budget constraints.

Logistics aside, your interviews are also an opportunity to see if your personalities “click.” You’ll be spending more time with your wedding planner than anyone else, so personal compatibility is essential. Look for someone who listens to your ideas, understands your values, communicates effectively, and is always receptive to feedback.

If sustainability is on your mind, we’d love to hear about your wedding plans!

Planning an Eco-Friendly Honeymoon

anthony-delanoix-43718.jpg

Oak & Honey Events is proud to be an environmentally friendly event planner. What does that mean? Well, it means that you’re conscientious about the resources consumed in the production of your event, and that you search out ways to make environmentally friendly choices throughout your planning process. If planning an environmentally friendly event is close to your heart, then you will love what we’re about to share. Oak & Honey Events teamed up with Lesley Cohen Travel Planning to bring you tips for extending your eco-friendly planning all the way through your honeymoon!

Many hotels are Do-Gooder establishments that give back to the community or use green supplies throughout their properties.

If you’re looking for a fabulous eco-friendly bachelorette destination or a stateside honeymoon, Lesley highly recommends the 1Hotel in Miami Beach. They use reclaimed materials in the hotel and everything is inspired by nature - hemp mattresses, organic sheets, the list goes on. 1Hotel also offers health-conscious amenities like fabulous exercise options, healthy food options with local ingredients, and a holistic spa. They truly provide an environment that is healthy for both their guests and the earth. Read more about their story, here.

If you prefer a more exotic honeymoon destination, Lesley recommends Laucala in Fiji. They put it best on their website: “Style and sustainability go hand in hand throughout,” and that could not be truer. Laucala uses farms and fisherman on the island for a real farm/sea to table experience. And you might have seen the photo of their famous glass-sided pool. It’s the epitome of luxury meets eco-friendly. Read more about their story, here.

Recycled Wedding Boutique Seller Tips

The Recycled Wedding Boutique is happening on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at John S. Knight Center in Akron and we can't wait! Oak & Honey Events created the Recycled Wedding Boutique, a flea market of sorts, in 2014 for Northeast Ohio couples. Soon-to-be newlyweds can shop new, slightly used, and vintage items to create the wedding of their dreams from recently married couples who are looking to offload their wedding items. Melanie of Oak & Honey Events now hosts alongside her “Wedding Bestie”, Amanda of Baci Designer to create a recycled event above any else in the area. Photo Credit: Full Bloom Photography

Today, we are sharing some tips with you about the best ways to sell your wedding decor, dresses, and more at the event!

  1. Pricing Items Everyone comes to the RWB looking for a good bargain. We encourage sellers to price their items at yard sale prices, which is roughly 20% of the retail price.  Make sure to clearly price all items individually with stickers and labels so transactions go smoothly.
  2. Bring Help - If you can, bring a helper with you since there is a rush of shoppers at the beginning of the event. One person can handle sales and the other person can wrap up and bag items. This HIGHLY recommended, given the crowds at the Recycled Wedding Boutique.
  3. Bring Wrapping and Bags -  It is helpful if you supply your own plastic bags, boxes, newspaper or other wrapping material for the items you are selling.
  4. Bring Change -  Many people go to the ATM right before and will be paying in 20s. If you have 10s, 5s and lots of 1s, you will be prepared.
  5. Credit Card Payments -   If you're selling more expensive items, you might want to consider taking credit card payments.

Melanie’s Picks

Lauren HB Studio

All of Lauren Studio’s products are handmade in Lakewood, Ohio. Lauren's products are inspired by her contemporary art upbringing and influenced by abstract geometric forms. I love the sleek, contemporary design but functional use. I've been swooning over their geometric diamond dish - a perfect addition to anyone's home.

Jessica N Designs

Jessica N Design products are hand stamped goodness made in Ohio. They offer a number of fun designs perfect for any occasion but you should have no trouble finding a gift for your hostess. I recommend spreaders with hand stamped sayings like," spread joy", "spread love", and "spread cheer," is the perfect holiday hostess gift. Cute and ready to use at any holiday get-together.

1820 House Candles

My current obsession is 1820 House Candles. The candles are hand poured based out of East Palestine, Ohio. Their candles focus on aromachology which is a "basic awareness of how a certain fragrance evokes feelings of peace, happiness, bliss, relaxation or bring up memories of something familiar or comforting." Pick-up a candle from their holiday collection your hostess is bound to love.

Pope’s Kitchen

Popes Kitchen offers fresh, locally sourced ingredients in all their products. They have a number of delicious cocktail mixes and bar products to spice-up any drink at your next holiday party. Some of my favorites are the Mellow Bloody Mary Mix, Strawberry Balsamic Sauce, or the Hot Sauce Gift Pack. The Mellow Bloody Mary Mix is perfect for News Years morning!

Sage and Spice Botanicals

Sage and Spice Botanicals is a small botanical company based in Cleveland, Ohio. They offer many artisan herbal products made with organic and fair trade botanicals. Sage and Spice has some great tea blends that are perfect for the friend that does not drink coffee. One of my favorites is the Sunset blend.

Willey Creek Spoon & Utensil

Willey Creek Spoon and Utensil utilizes traditional greenwood carving techniques to make wooden spoons and various other kitchen utensils. I chatted with Bill, the owner, at the Crafty Mart in Akron, and he shared with me that many of the items he makes use fallen down wood in his backyard. The spoons would be a great addition to tie on to a jar of Pope’s Kitchen’s Strawberry Balsamic sauce.

Chagrin Valley Soap and Salve – Mens Skin Care Set

As much as the man in our lives don’t love skin care, this gift set is great because it covers not only skin care but shaving as well. Eco-Friendly Wedding Stationery Tips

We are so excited to announce that Amanda Cursaro of Baci Designer will be taking over the blog this week! She will be sharing eco-friendly tips for couples who are looking to reduce their impact on the environment with their wedding stationery.

Amanda is the owner of Baci Designer, a boutique wedding stationery company founded in 2008. Baci's mission is to create timeless wedding invitations and coordinated details through original and intentional designs for engaged couples seeking an editorial look that is reflective of their style.

Often people assume stationery isn't one of the areas of their wedding where they can truly be eco-friendly. After all, it is mostly paper and I've often heard, "It will just get thrown away." However, that isn't necessarily the case if you put original and intentional thought into creating an heirloom-quality design people will want to share with others and treasure as a keepsake for years to come.

Aside from the thoughts of a mushy custom stationer on why wedding paper isn't wasteful, there are tons of practical options to reduce your environmental impact when choosing your stationery.

Recycled and Tree-Free Stock Options

The obvious start is with 100% recycled stock. This can come in most any form, but our favorites come from the Neenah Paper Mill in fabulous tones like Concrete, Grocer's Kraft, Honeycomb and Wrought Iron. Gone are the days of drab, dirty looking recycled stock. Neenah's Environmental Line is not only created using sustainable practices, but 100% renewable electricity as well.

The majority of the wedding stationery we create here at Baci Designer is printed on Savoy's 100% Pure Cotton Stock - it not only offers the most luxurious fabric-like texture, but it is tree-free, acid-free, recyclable, biodegradable and elemental chlorine-free.

A fun and unique option is Seeded Stock made with post-consumer materials (often paper and fabric) and embedded with seeds that can be planted after use. Each sheet is completely different from the next, adding a fabulous element of texture and thickness. Seeded Stock comes with seed options to plant everything from flowers to herbs and vegetables.

Hiring a professional stationer will provide you with the most resources and knowledge in order to ensure you're getting the best eco-friendly wedding suite options. They'll also be able to ensure you are ordering correct quantities to cut down on waste and brainstorm some of the best options to help reduce your impact.

Useful Homemade or Local Flowers

When choosing favors to gift your guests at the end of the night, stop and think about how useful they are before purchasing. Consumable items are often the best option here - think a trio of macarons from your local bakery, homemade jam using an old family recipe or your favorite childhood treat packaged in a reusable container. A simple tag printed on one of the recycled and tree-free stock options above can accompany all of these pieces.

Reusable and Repurposed Decor and Signage

image5

Day-of stationery pieces are some of our favorite things to create, but they require a bit more thought ensuring they aren't wasteful. We love to see pieces in your home as decoration (welcome signs and picture frames used for table numbers are perfect for this!) or as an heirloom piece you put away for your own children (a framed program or laser-cut cake topper).

Repurposing items from the ceremony to the reception is also a great way to minimize your impact. Your planner will happily move your welcome sign from the ceremony entrance to greet guests as they enter the reception as well. We also create two-sided signs for this purpose, too.

Renting or Selling Items Post-Wedding

Don't see a need for 25 acrylic table numbers after your wedding? Try renting first. Sometimes things are created specifically for you and your event, so renting isn't an option, but it is worth inquiring. If you can't find exactly what you're looking for as a rental and you do need to purchase pieces, after your wedding sign up for a resale event (like Recycled Wedding Boutique) or post on a sale site for the next lovely bride to snag for her big day!

Thanks again, Amanda, for sharing such insightful information!

May Wedding at Heritage Barn

This Heritage Barn wedding was a long time coming! Sam and Mike began dating when they were just 15 years old. Although their teenage romance was short-lived, their love story was just getting started. Sam went off to college, and Mike joined the Army National Guard. Not too long after, they began running into each other quite frequently due to their many mutual friends, which led to them re-starting their relationship during their sophomore year of college. In 2009, Mike found out that he was going to be deployed to Afghanistan. He said that it was near the end of his deployment that he knew for sure that he wanted to marry Sam. He proposed on July 4, 2014, and the rest is history!

Their wedding took place over Memorial Day weekend at Heritage Barn in Stow, Ohio. Their decor consisted of a bright mix of pink and navy, with touches of orange accenting the decor. With both indoor and outdoor spaces, Heritage Barn is the perfect venue for weddings all year round. Sam and Mike's ceremony took place outside on the grass, and their reception was held inside the barn.

Sam selected Fair Rarity Flowers for her wedding florals, which were all locally sourced. The popcorn served at the reception was also made locally by CrazyButTrue Popcorn. The Oak & Honey Events team was able to assist the couple with floral re-purposing by donating all the flowers from the wedding to Elmcroft of Sagamore Hills, an assisted living center in the area.

Sam also left us this incredibly sweet 5-star review on The Knot:

"If I could give Oak & Honey Events more stars, I would!! Melanie and I worked together for about a year and a half on my wedding, and she was fantastic throughout the entire process. She was knowledgeable about different vendors and really tried to help me choose the right ones that fit in my budget and worked well with my theme. She was always available to help answer my questions, whether it was a phone call, text or email, especially when it was closer to the wedding date. The day of, she was (in my opinion), the hero of the day! She made the venue look AMAZING with the help of her staff, and the day went absolutely perfect! She was always checking on my husband and I to see if we needed anything, and she also checked on our parents as well! She really helped to make our day perfect, and it was! She really made the whole wedding planning process a breeze, and my husband and I couldn't have been more lucky to work with her. If you need a wedding planner, Melanie with Oak & Honey Events should most definitely be your #1 pick. You'll be so happy you did!! <3"
